Reading management books is not everyone’s favorite pastime. In today’s environment, it’s just as important to read outside our profession as inside, to get ideas and fresh perspectives and to hone our managerial and leadership skills.
I do try to do this reading, so wanted to share what I think are the best newer books as well as a basic bibliography of books I recommend to managers and organizational leaders.
I also recommend these three magazines because they provide a wider perspective and good information that library managers can use very day:
American Demographics – This magazine provides a wealth of demographic and marketing information in colorful graphs and well-written articles. Keep up with who we are serving (or should be serving).
Business Week – Consultant Joan Frye Williams suggested this reading at a presentation I attended several years ago. I took her advice and have come to value the insight provided into world events as well as business events and personalities. Good management and technology—at a level you can understand—information as well.
Workforce Management – You can get this monthly magazine free by signing up at workforce.com. I’ve found every issue to have something that is relevant to the library workplace: recruiting, compensation planning, benefits management, performance management, etc.
